Your rating unlocks far more than monthly compensation. Here's what you qualify for at each tier.
Free or low-cost medical care, prescriptions, mental health services, and specialist visits through the VA healthcare system.
No copay for prescriptions related to your service-connected disability. Other prescriptions may have minimal copays based on income.
Vocational Rehabilitation & Employment benefits for education, job training, and career counseling related to your disability.
Monthly pay increases for each dependent spouse, child, or parent added to your award at 30% or higher rating.
Most states offer full or partial vehicle registration and property tax exemptions for veterans at 50% or higher. Varies by state.
Many states offer significant property tax reductions or full exemptions for disabled veterans at 50%+. Check your state's program.
Your eligible family members may receive comprehensive health coverage through the Civilian Health and Medical Program at 100% P&T.
Free national park access, commissary/PX privileges, commissary shopping rights, free hunting/fishing licenses in many states, and more.
Veterans' Group Life Insurance is available regardless of health status. Coverage from $10,000 up to $500,000.
Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability (TDIU) allows veterans to receive 100% VA compensation ($3,938.58/month) even if their combined rating is below 100% — if their disability prevents them from working.
This is one of the most overlooked benefits in the VA system. Thousands of veterans are being underpaid because they don't know they qualify.
The key question: Can your service-connected disability prevent you from securing or maintaining substantially gainful employment?
If you have one service-connected disability rated at 70% or higher that prevents you from working, you may qualify for TDIU — paid at the full 100% rate.
If your combined rating is 70%+ with at least one condition at 40%, you may qualify. The total must reach 70% using VA's combined math.
If approved for TDIU, you receive the full 100% rate — $3,938.58/month for a veteran alone — tax-free. Plus applicable dependent add-ons.
