Fibromyalgia โ widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, sleep issues, and cognitive difficulties โ is a legitimate VA disability condition that many veterans don't realize they can claim. Here's exactly how the VA rates it and the powerful secondary connections that make this an important claim for many veterans.
๐ Fibromyalgia Fast Facts
Rated under Diagnostic Code 5025. Ratings are 10%, 20%, or 40% based on how well symptoms respond to treatment. Fibromyalgia is strongly associated with PTSD and military sexual trauma (MST) โ secondary or direct service connection through these pathways is very achievable. VA Fibromyalgia Rating Criteria (DC 5025)
| Rating | Criteria | Monthly Pay (Alone) |
|---|---|---|

Service Connection for Fibromyalgia
Fibromyalgia can be service connected three ways:
- Direct service connection โ Show the condition began during service or was diagnosed in service
- Secondary to PTSD โ Research strongly supports that PTSD triggers and worsens fibromyalgia. If you have service-connected PTSD, filing fibromyalgia as secondary is well-supported scientifically. See our PTSD guide.
- Secondary to MST (Military Sexual Trauma) โ MST is one of the strongest known triggers of fibromyalgia. Veterans who experienced MST should file fibromyalgia as secondary.
Documenting Fibromyalgia for Maximum Rating
- Document specifically how symptoms respond (or don't respond) to treatment โ this determines your rating level
- Keep a pain diary showing symptom frequency and severity over time
- Have your treating physician document that symptoms are "refractory" โ resistant to treatment โ if that is your experience
- Describe the cognitive symptoms ("fibro fog") which also affect employability
Secondary Conditions to Claim with Fibromyalgia
- Depression/anxiety โ Extremely common with fibromyalgia. See our mental health guide.
- Sleep disorders โ Fibromyalgia disrupts sleep. See our sleep apnea guide.
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) โ Strongly associated with fibromyalgia, rated separately
